I’ve heard so much about this film. It feels like everyone is talking about it. It’s nice to have a small film get this kind of attention but it did also make it a long wait for it to arrive in the UK and I was worried about it being overhyped by the time I saw it.
You know what? This film is pretty good. It’s such a cool idea to do a multiverse story but as an original idea rather than an IP driven one. It means you can go to universes with weird ideas like sausage fingers rather than where X actor plays Iron Man.
The thing that makes this film stand out is the relationships at the heart of the story. We get a lovely Husband/Wife & Mother/Daughter relationship that drives all the multiverse nonsense forward. All of it comes together thanks to amazing performances from Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu and Ke Huy Quan.
I saw the film with my partner and she said she liked Ke Huy Quan’s performance as Waymond Wang as it reminded her of me and I can’t think of a bigger compliment than that. He was a top tier Wife Guy in modern cinema.
These are lot of fun multiverse stuff compared to another multiverse film that came out recently and they all feel like they are in service of the narrative and journey that the characters are going on.
Everything Everywhere All at Once is a fun original film that proves that there is still an appetite for these kinds of film but you’ve got to let them play in cinemas long enough for people to see them. I had to travel quite a bit to find a screening near me.
