Hustle (2022)

It looked like a lot of people were watching this film on Netflix by the looks of Letterboxd. I didn’t have much planned one morning so I decided to give this film a shot and you know what? I had a good time with it.

Hustle is about Stanley Sugerman, a down-on-his-luck basketball scout played by Adam Sandler, who discovers Bo Cruz, an extraordinary player from Spain played by Juancho Hernangómez. He decides to bring the player back without his team’s approval.

I love a sports drama even if it’s a sport I don’t really care about. I do like basketball but I don’t get a chance to watch it very often. This film manages to make basketball even more engaging than it is in real life and you really feel the highs and lows of it.

Adam Sandler is the perfect choice for a down-on-his-luck character especially now that he’s older and he get some good grey stubble grown. If he wanted to, he could probably go down the Ben Affleck route of playing sad drunk dads.

The performances of the cast are pretty good considering a lot of them are actual basketball players. Not a Michael Jordan in Space Jam among them. Ben Foster is also really good at playing a dickhead boss. He could do dickhead boss roles while Sandler does sad drunk dad roles.

Hustle is a pretty good sports drama and I imagine it’s the perfect to watch with your dad. It’s got everything you could want from a dad film which is probably why it did so well over the Father’s Day weekend.
