Hilda

My partner and I started watching this a while but we only just finished it recently and even then we watched it separately. I think this is a fun show that people of all ages can enjoy. It probably is a good idea for some people to watch a show like this to maybe get a good sense of child-like wonder at the world around.

The show has drama and conflict but not in a way that would make you too worried about showing it younger children. It feels like a cute and quirky version of Mona the Vampire. You have the three children going on adventures together involving magical creatures and monsters. Hilda has a dog/deer hybrid as a pet instead of a cat but it is pretty similar but it’d say Hilda as a show is a lot better.

The world of Hilda is a fun and whimsical one inhabited by lots of unique creatures. We get to meet some elves that are invisible to you until you sign a contract, some trolls made of rocks and a group of teenage girls that give people nightmares. I like how they try to on focus on the creatures that they set up throughout the series rather than bringing in new ones and never mentioning the old ones.

The show has a very good selection of secondary characters including Alfur, an elf who comes with Hilda to the city to document the place of the elf society. We also have Woodman, a man who is made of wood that comes to see Hilda when she lives in the woods with her mam. The Great Raven that pops in a few episodes throughout the series and offers some good comedic moments.

I like how the show explores problems that kids face but in a fantasy setting like having peer pressuring teenagers being mythical creatures that give you nightmare and having Hilda adapt to living in a city compared to her old magical forest home. It is good to have lessons and themes in shows especially for kids as you want them to be able to take something away from it that may help them deal with problems that they are facing.

The animation style feels so unique and works well with the fantasy setting. It feels like it is a moving comic book and you can feel the love that has been put into every frame of the show. It made me realise why I look 2D animation so much and it is because it feels like it has some love put into and it has a rustic quality to it that you can’t get from 3D animation.

The way the season ended made it seem like they weren’t planning to do a second season but it turns out that they do have another season planned and it is coming out in the fall of this year so that’s pretty exciting! I look forward to seeing what they do in the second season, I’m sure it will be a lot of fun.
